Archelon lived during the Late Cretaceous and is the largest sea turtle ever documented, with the biggest specimen measuring 15ft from head to tail. A mostly complete skeleton was first found in 1895 by American Palaeontlogist George Reber Wieland within the Late Campanian-age Pierre shale of South Dakota. He named it Archelon ischyros from the ancient greek (arkhe) 'first', (chelone) 'turtle' and the species name (ischyros) 'powerful'.
